The company was founded in 2001 as a spin-off of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute at the University of Paderborn. Since then, additional locations have been opened in Cologne and Dresden.

As a strategic partner in the field of piezo and ultrasonic technology, we actively support your research and development work. Together with our customers from companies, universities and independent inventors, we develop new ideas and prototypes for efficient and profitable solutions. We evaluate promising approaches – for example using simulation – and convert them into profitable innovations.

Our interdisciplinary team consists of doctoral engineers and industrial engineers as well as specialized lawyers and computer scientists.

With our expertise and many years of experience, we look for attractive funding, develop efficient protection strategies, research suitable co-operation partners and also offer software tools for patent monitoring as well as expert opinions for the monetary valuation of patents.

ATHENA is a reliable and long-standing partner in important programmes of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, a qualified WIPANO service provider, a ZIM consultant and a supporting member of PIZnet, the working group of patent information centres in Germany.

We cooperate closely with numerous universities, technical colleges, universities of applied sciences, business development organisations, chambers of industry and commerce, chambers of skilled trades, patent attorneys, project management agencies and other competent innovation service providers.
